Malware - Short for malicious software. Software designed specifically to damage
or disrupt a system, such as a virus or a Trojan horse.
Master Boot Record - The start up information needed for a computer to find its operating
system (Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP/Vista).
MDS Signature Verification - An algorithm that is used to create digital signatures
for programs or applications. In essence, MD5 is a way to verify data integrity,
to make sure the program or file has not been manipulated or changed. It is one
of the most powerful and reliable security protection methods used today to check
for malicious code that has been imbedded into “trusted” programs.

NAT - Network Address Translation. The translation of a computer’s IP Address that
is used in one network, to a different IP address in another network. Can be used
as a form of protection or security by blocking IP addresses. Some security devices
are NAT systems that reside on a server.
NIPC - The National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) was established in February
1998, and is considered the U.S. Government’s focal point for threat assessment,
warning, investigation, and response for threats or attacks against critical national
infrastructures. Most recently, the NIPC released its first complete CyberSecurity
plan for the U.S.
Network - A network is a series of computers or devices connected to each other to
transfer information. Networks can also be connected to other networks. Networks
increase the speed and efficiency of people working together in a common environment.
Network Server - The main computer that connects all the computers on a network.
It acts as a traffic cop, directing all data transmissions between computers and
other devices such as a printers. The network server regulates what goes in and
out of the network.

Operating System - Also called the OS or O/S. It is the main program that manages
all other programs and applications in a computer. Windows is the most popular operating
system used in the world. Other operating systems include Unix, Linux, Mac OS, and
BSD.
Overlapping Security - The use of several different security programs at the same
time to protect a computer. Each program performs a different task, but overlaps
and complements the others to form a tight web of security.
Over Payment Fraud - An incident in which the complaintant receives an invalid monetary
instrument, with instructions to deposit it in a bank account and to send excess
funds or a percentage of the deposited money back to the sender.
