Quarantine - To move an infected file, such as a virus, into a file on the computer
where it cannot cause harm. Some security software such as anti-virus systems comes
with quarantine options.
Query - A specific request made to database or other file management system. A simple
example of this is a search engine on the Internet used to find a specific topic
or web site. The user is “querying” the online database to find what they want.

RAT - Remote Administration Tool. RAT is a Trojan horse that allows a hacker to
take control of a remote computer.
Real Time - Real time is a level of computer responsiveness where a user senses immediate
response to a request or is given information and data at the same time as it is
released. A real-time security warning alerts a user to new threats as they emerge.
Reboot - To re-start a computer. To reload the operating system into memory. Many
computer programs require you to reboot after installation.
Red Flags Rule - The expression “red flag” signals “Danger: Be alert to problems
ahead.” Under the Red Flags Rule, which first went into effect on January 1, 2008,
certain businesses and organizations are required to spot and heed the red flags
that often can be the telltale signs of identity theft. To comply with the new Red
Flags Rule – enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the federal band regulatory
agencies, and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) – businesses must develop
a written “red flags program” to prevent, detect, and minimize the damage from identity
theft. The Red Flags Rule applies to anyone who arranges for or extends credit or
payment terms, or who provides products or services and bills or invoices the customer.


Registry - A database inside Windows operating systems that stores critical hardware
and software settings. Controls the Windows operating system and the applications
running on the computer by providing information to start applications and load different
components.
Remote Access - The ability to gain access and control a computer or a network from
another computer in a remote location.
Rescue Disc - A disc, or set of disks, that contains uncontaminated, critical data
and instructions to bring a computer back to operational status after being infected
with a virus or some other harmful event.
Retrovirus - A virus that waits until all possible backup media are infected before
activating, thereby making it
Router - A device that connects any number of networks. A hardware device that is
used to direct data and information to the intended and proper network.
